The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention calls clean hands the most important factor in preventing the spread of germs. Make proper hand washing a personal habit – it is one of the best ways to avoid getting sick and spreading illnesses.

How to Wash Your Hands:

*Wet your hands with clean, warm water and apply soap
*Rub hands together to lather and scrub
*Continue rubbing hands for 20 seconds
*Rinse hands well under running water
*Dry your hands using a paper towel
*Use a paper towel to turn off the faucet
*Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer to clean hands throughout the day

When to Wash Your Hands:

*Before eating
*After using the restroom
*After touching contaminated surfaces (door knobs, sink handles, light switches)
*Before inserting contact lenses
*When caring for someone who is sick
*After handling food
*Before and after treating a cut or wound
*Whenever your hands look dirty

If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based gel to clean hands. The gels should be rubbed into hands until they are dry.
